eBay Fees and Sales Tax by State (2026)
eBay's fee is charged on the sales tax the buyer pays, which many sellers miss. That makes the same sale cost more in fees in a high-tax state than in a state with no sales tax. Here is the exact difference, state by state.
Fees verified October 2026 · Tax rates as of July 1, 2026Why sales tax changes your eBay fee
- eBay takes its percentage of the total amount of the sale. eBay's fee page says that total includes the item price, handling charges, shipping and sales tax. For most categories without a Store that is 13.6% up to $7,500, plus the per-order fee.
- You don't keep the tax, but you pay the fee on it. The tax goes to the state. The fee on that tax is taken from your payout, so every $1.00 of sales tax costs you about 13.6 cents.
- Example, Texas. A $50 item with $8 shipping at Texas's 8.20% average rate has $4.76 of tax, so eBay charges its fee on $62.76 instead of $58.00. Your fees are $8.93 instead of $8.29 in a state with no sales tax, which is $0.64 more.
- The extra grows with the order. The extra fee is roughly 13.6% of the tax, so it scales with the sale. At the 7.5% US average it's $0.59 on this $50 sale, and $2.19 on a $200 item with $15 shipping.

Frequently asked questions
Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?
Yes. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and eBay says that total includes the item price, handling charges, shipping and sales tax. Where tax applies, eBay adds it at checkout and the fee is calculated on the larger total.
How much does sales tax add to my eBay fees?
About 13.6 cents for every dollar of tax, because the fee is 13.6% of the total. On a $50 item with $8 shipping, that's $0.59 at the 7.5% US average, and $0.80 in Louisiana, the state with the highest average combined rate (10.13%).
Which states make eBay fees the highest?
Those with the highest combined state and local sales tax: Louisiana (10.13%), Tennessee (9.61%), Washington (9.57%). A buyer in a state with no statewide sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon) adds little or nothing.
Can I avoid eBay's fee on sales tax?
No. There's no setting to turn it off, because the tax is part of how eBay defines the total amount of the sale. The tax depends on where the buyer lives, not on anything you choose.
Is the rate in this table my buyer's exact rate?
No. It's the average combined state and local rate for the state, from the Tax Foundation. A buyer's real rate depends on their city and county, and some items are taxed differently. Use the eBay fee calculator to enter any rate you like.
Does an eBay Store change this?
The tax effect is the same idea with a lower percentage. With a Basic, Premium or Anchor Store, most categories pay 12.7%, so the same $50 sale at the 7.5% US average adds $0.55 instead of $0.59.
Do other platforms charge fees on sales tax too?
Some do. Facebook Marketplace charges its percentage on the total including tax, and Depop, Whatnot and Etsy charge payment processing on the order total including tax. Poshmark, Mercari and TikTok Shop don't use the buyer's tax in the fee.
