How to price on Etsy

Worked example

Example. A handmade candle uses $6.50 of wax, wick, scent and jar, $1.25 of packaging and $0.50 of other supplies, and takes 45 minutes to make at $20/hour. You charge the buyer $5.95 for shipping, the label costs $5.20, and the buyer's sales tax is 7.5%. You want a 30% margin.

10%$30.05$3.95$3.60$24.80

50%$65.79$7.42$35.87$67.83

At $42.01 the candle makes exactly 30%, so list it at $42.99: Etsy's fees are $5.21, your profit after paying yourself is $15.28 and your real pay works out to $40.37 an hour. Below $26.06 you lose money once you count your time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the price of a handmade item on Etsy?

Add up materials, packaging and other costs per item, add your time (minutes × hourly rate) and the shipping label, then find the price where what's left after Etsy's fees is the margin you want. Etsy's fees are a percentage of the price, so the price has to be solved for: in the example, costs of $28.45 need a price of $42.01 for a 30% margin.

What percentage does Etsy take from a sale?

In the US, about 10% of the order plus $0.45: a 6.5% transaction fee on the item and shipping, 3% + $0.25 payment processing on the total including tax, and the $0.20 listing fee. Offsite Ads add 15% (or 12%) on orders they bring in. In the example, the fees are $5.21 on a $42.99 sale.

What profit margin should I aim for on Etsy?

After paying yourself for your time, many makers aim for 25% to 40%. A margin that's too thin leaves nothing for Etsy Ads, discounts, returns or rising supply costs.

Should I use the “materials × 2 or × 3” rule?

It's a starting point, but it ignores your time and Etsy's fees, which grow with the price. Pricing from your full cost per item, your hourly rate and a target margin tells you whether a price really pays.

Should prices end in .99?

Many sellers use .99 or .95 endings. The calculator rounds up to the next price ending in .99 so you never land below your margin.

Does free shipping change my price?

Yes. With free shipping you charge $0 for shipping, so the label cost has to come out of the item price, and Etsy's fees are on that higher price. The calculator handles both: set the shipping you charge to $0.

Does this include Etsy Ads or sales?

No. Etsy Ads are a daily budget you set, and sales are discounts you choose. A healthy margin is what pays for both. Offsite Ads are included when you choose them.
