Your tips deduction

A planning estimate, not tax advice. It uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, with no credits (such as the child tax credit) and no other deductions, which can lower both figures. Above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint) the deduction drops by $100 for each $1,000, worked out per dollar here. Check the result with your tax software or a tax professional.

How no tax on tips works

Worked example

Example. A single server earns $38,000 in 2026 on a W-2, $18,000 of it in tips. After the $16,100 standard deduction, federal income tax without the tips deduction would be $2,380. Deducting the $18,000 of tips leaves $3,900 taxable, so income tax is $390: a saving of $1,990, about $11.06 for every $100 of tips.

Social Security and Medicare still take $1,377 of those tips (7.65%). A bartender with $30,000 of tips and $55,000 of pay gets the full $25,000 deduction and saves $3,000.

Frequently asked questions

Are tips tax-free in 2026?

Not completely. Up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year can be deducted from federal taxable income for 2025 through 2028, so many tipped workers pay little or no federal income tax on them. Social Security and Medicare still apply, and your state may tax them.

How much will no tax on tips save me?

Your tips times your top tax rate, roughly. Most servers and bartenders are in the 10% or 12% bracket, so the saving is about $10 to $12 for every $100 of tips; in the example above it's $1,990 on $18,000. The calculator works it out from your own pay.

Do I have to itemize to get the tips deduction?

No. It's claimed on Schedule 1-A and you get it on top of the standard deduction.

Do automatic gratuities and service charges count?

No. Only tips the customer chose to give count. A mandatory service charge or an automatic gratuity added to the bill is paid to you as wages.

Do tips from a tip pool count? What about tip-outs?

Tips you receive through a tip pool or tip sharing count. The tips you tip out to bussers, runners or bartenders are theirs, not yours, so report and deduct what you keep.

Is the $25,000 limit per person or per return?

The deduction is capped at $25,000 on a return, and married couples must file jointly to claim it, so a couple who both earn tips still share one $25,000 limit.

Does the tips deduction lower Social Security and Medicare?

No. It only lowers federal income tax. Employees still have 7.65% taken out of their tips, and the self-employed pay 15.3% self-employment tax on their profit, tips included.

Should I change my W-4?

You can. If you expect the deduction, enter it with your other deductions in Step 4(b) of a new Form W-4 so your employer withholds less. Otherwise the saving comes back as a bigger refund when you file.
