Airbnb vs Vrbo host fees in 2026
- Airbnb's single fee: 15.5% for most hosts. It comes out of your payout and the guest sees no separate service fee. It's charged on the nightly price plus cleaning and other fees you charge, not on taxes. Airbnb says the remaining hosts typically pay 14% to 16%.
- Vrbo: 12% from October 29, 2026. Pay-per-booking hosts pay 12% of the rental amount and fees such as cleaning, with no separate processing fee when Vrbo takes the payment. Before that it was 5% commission plus 3% processing, the 3% also on taxes.
- The gap grows with the booking: on a $500 stay Airbnb takes $77.50 and Vrbo $60.00. On $1,000 it's $155.00 against $120.00, and on $3,000 $465.00 against $360.00. Vrbo leaves you 3.5% of the booking more every time.
- To keep your Vrbo payout on Airbnb, charge 4.1% more. You keep 100% - 12% of each dollar on Vrbo and 100% - 15.5% on Airbnb's single fee, so prices need to be 1.041 times as high there.
- Hosts still on Airbnb's split fee pay 3%, less than Vrbo, but their guests pay Airbnb a 14.1% to 16.5% service fee on top. Airbnb is moving all home hosts to the single fee.
- Guests pay Vrbo a traveler service fee on top of your price. On Airbnb's single fee they pay none, so the same nightly rate can look cheaper to the guest on Airbnb even though you keep less.

Worked example
Example. A cabin books for 3 nights at $200 with a $100 cleaning fee: a $700 subtotal, plus $70 of lodging taxes (10%). Here is what you'd keep:
| Platform | Fee rate | Fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airbnb, single fee | 15.5% | $108.50 | $591.50 |
| Airbnb, split fee | 3% | $21.00 | $679.00 |
| Vrbo, from Oct 29, 2026 | 12% | $84.00 | $616.00 |
| Vrbo, before Oct 29, 2026 | 5% + 3% | $58.10 | $641.90 |
| Booking.com | 15% | $105.00 | $595.00 |
| Direct booking | 2.9% + $0.30 | $22.63 | $677.37 |
Vrbo's 12% leaves this host $24.50 more than Airbnb's single fee. On Airbnb, charging $208.28 a night and $104.14 for cleaning keeps the same $616.00.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vrbo cheaper than Airbnb for hosts?
Yes, against Airbnb's single fee: 12% against 15.5% of the booking, at every booking size. On the example's $700 stay you'd keep $616.00 on Vrbo and $591.50 on Airbnb. Hosts still on Airbnb's 3% split fee keep more on Airbnb, but their guests pay Airbnb's service fee on top.
Do Airbnb and Vrbo charge their fee on the cleaning fee?
Both do. Airbnb's service fee and Vrbo's commission are a percentage of the nightly total plus the fees you charge, such as cleaning and pet fees. Neither is charged on lodging taxes.
How much more should I charge on Airbnb than on Vrbo?
About 4.1% more to keep the same payout: multiply your Vrbo nightly rate and cleaning fee by 1.041. In the example, $200 a night on Vrbo matches $208.28 on Airbnb.
Do guests pay more on Vrbo or Airbnb?
It depends on your prices. Vrbo adds a traveler service fee to the guest's total; Airbnb's single fee adds none, because the host pays it all. Compare the checkout total for the same dates on both before you set your rates.
Are Airbnb and Vrbo fees tax deductible?
Yes. Platform fees are an expense of renting the property, usually on Schedule E. Lodging taxes the platforms collect for you aren't your income or your expense.
